Types of esports games

There are a lot of different esports games that support betting, just like there are different sports that you can bet on. Those games can be grouped in several genres, such as fighting games, first-person shooters (FPS), real-time strategies (RTS), sports games, racing, multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), collectable card games (CCG), and many more.

The most popular esports betting games are StarCraft 1 and 2 (RTS), Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (FPS), Overwatch (FPS), Dota 2 (MOBA), League of Legends (MOBA), Hearthstone (CCG).

Types of betting in esports

There are also a lot of types of betting in esports. They depend from game to game. Also, some bookmakers will offer some types that others do not have. Moreover, bigger tournaments have bigger coverage, which means more bookmakers will cover it and more types of betting will be available.

Pre-Match betting

It is the most common and most used type of betting. You simply need to place your bet before the match starts and hope for the right outcome. There are more than 100 types of pre-match betting nowadays. Besides betting on a match winner (money line betting) the most common ones are handicap betting, totals, and proposition bet.

Money line Esports betting - You simply bet which team or a player is going to win a match.

Handicap Esports betting - If the heavily favorited team is playing against a lot weaker one you should use handicap betting. You can bet that a better team will win a match with a handicap. For example, if you bet on a Team A with -4,5 handicap on them that means they have to win with more than 5 rounds difference. You can also use handicap betting on a number of maps.  If the handicap is -1,5 on team A and it is a Bo3 match, Team A needs to win that match with 2-0.

Totals - You are betting on specific stat during a match. For example, a number of kills, deaths or some other specific stat.

Proposition bets - Fun bets that are focused on some odd parts of the match. For example, will there be a pause that is longer than X amount of minutes?

Live Betting

For those who love to bet during a match, there is a live betting option. Live betting is becoming the most popular way of betting. Live betting means that you are betting while a match is being played. During live betting, it is important to be really fast and precise, because odds are updated every few seconds. Live betting also requires a lot of knowledge of that game and you have to know to predict things that might happen correctly.

Outright Betting

This type of betting is used before the whole tournament. You can bet on a certain team to win that tournament before the tournament even starts. You can also bet that some team will reach the finals, semi-finals and so on. However, betting on Esports outrights has always been packed with high odds, so you should always consider making at least one bet before the tournament.

Fantasy Betting

This type of betting is similar to outright betting. Even though it is not a popular betting method, it is the most entertaining one for sure. What is this about? You basically have to create your ideal team. For example, if you are betting on CS:GO you would have to create a team with 5 individuals from at least 3 different teams. In most cases, you will be limited by the salary cap which means that the better players would cost more. You will not be able to have all five-star players in your roster. That means that you would have to find a perfect balance of players that you think would overperform on that tournament. There is an entry fee on the fantasy pool and money from all participants is collected and put in a prize pool.  Every fantasy pool has different rules. The most common pools have simple rules, kill gives 2 points, assist 1 and death -1. At the end of the tournament, top X number of players from the fantasy pool share the money from the prize pool.

Likelihood of someone winning or losing is expressed in odds, just like in sports betting. Two types that are the most common ones are fractional and decimal.

Example of fractional odds. Let's say that you see 4/1, that would imply that the bettor stands to make a $40 profit on a $10 stake (so that is total of $50). If the odds are 1/4, the bettor will make $25 on a $100 stake.

Example of decimal odds. If you see 2.50 odds, that means for every $1 you bet, you get $2.50 (but your profit is $1.50).

If you decide to bet on esports make sure that you are familiar with genre and game that you are betting on. Betting requires a lot of knowledge about teams and players, not only luck. This is why you also should constantly watch and learn about teams during important tournaments. It is also good to check predictions from other people because they might know more about certain things.

Never go all-in. There is too much risk, and it is better to bet on multiple, not on just one.

Have a limited amount of money for betting, so-called bankroll. Put a certain amount of money on a side and do not spend more than that!

Sometimes you lose, and sometimes you win. This is a really important thing to know. It is simply impossible to win every bet. However, if you are losing a lot, rethink your betting strategies. This is why it is good to write down your betting history so you can learn from your mistakes.

Be patient and calm. Don’t expect to win a lot of money in a small amount of time. If you do that is great! But don’t rush with another bet and potentially lose it.
